Learning from the biomechanics of the world's best middle-distance runners

Achieving success in middle-distance racing is dependent on optimising the relationship between biomechanical variables, which are of course affected by internal physiological processes. In this presentation, Brian will present findings from research on the biomechanics of world-class middle-distance runners and explain how these results can inform training in distance runners of all standards. In particular, he will draw upon the important spatiotemporal measures found in World Championship competition.

 

Docent: Hanley Brian

Dr Brian Hanley is a Senior Lecturer in Sport & Exercise Biomechanics at Leeds Beckett University. His research is mainly on the biomechanics of distance running and race walking, as well as the pacing profiles adopted by endurance athletes. Brian also conducts longitudinal studies measuring the development of athletes and research on sports technology and competition structure. Brian led on the scientific aspects of the Biomechanics Research Projects at the IAAF World Championships in London in 2017 and the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham in 2018, as well as being the Event Director for distance running events (London) and pole vault (Birmingham). Over the past 15 years, Brian has provided biomechanical support to athletes from around the world in their preparation for global championships..
